Hello everyone! Just thought I would share that I got my first snake ever 2 weeks ago. It (too young to sex still) is an ivory california kingsnake and is about 5 months old. Everything snake-y is new to me, as I have kept many geckos and a skink previously. I have read books, frequent many forums and keep in touch with other snake keepers, but if…[Read more]

My boy, Jormungandr went to Wisconsin on breeding loan this past October. This spring he did his job and his girlfriend Glockenspiel is gravid. But we think it will be a small clutch. Yesterday my boy was shipped to Ohio and arrived this morning for his next breeding loan. His new girlfriend is named, Daytona. She looks almost exactly like…[Read more]

Hi I have just brought my first california king. I’m usually a keeper of corns. He is 5 and 5 foot can anyone tell me how they have there viv set ups what’s in them and a bit about them. I have done my research but everysnakes different thankyou

    • The care requirements for California kingsnakes and corn snakes are very similar. In fact, most of the North American colubrids can be kept under the same conditions. A temperature gradient of 75 – 85 degrees (Fahrenheit) will suffice for a California kingsnake. In my experience, they are much more “mobile” than corns, so make sure your snake…[Read more]

Just give him time and he should calm down. I would give him a week to get comfortable in his new surroundings before really trying to hold him. Once you do start to get him out you should just reach in and grab […]

It seems like there is more interest in pursuing unique morphs with kingsnakes. For a long time, it was just stripes or bands, take your pick. Most of the selective breeding focus was on corns, ball pythons, etc. […]

    • i had a chocolate banana male and a lav albino female… when i was new to snake breeding.. (2010 hahahah) but i gave up on breeding them i guess i didnt cool them cold enough or something because they only wanted to eat each other

      • Are you positive they are male and female? Or are you positive they are trying to eat each other? The females are usually the ones that will try to eat the male if she isn’t in the mood to mate. Also the male will bite the female on the neck while trying to mate. That’s one reason it’s always suggesting to use a female kings in hybrid…[Read more]

        • lol yes i’m sure… she was choking him to death lol i didnt cool her long enough or cold enough idk which she was cooled around 70 for about a month i was assured it was long enough…..

          • brought her out of it doubled her food intake til she shed then i placed him with her and she tried to eat him also waited 3 days later and put her with him… same thing
so i traded them for a B&W tegu

            • they were my first kings i could have done it right the following season but eh

              • Sounds about right. The female wanting to eat the male. Guess she didn’t like him. I’m not sure what the woman who has my male is keep their temps at. But normally it’s around 50 – 60 fahrenheit. They have been in burmation since November and will be brought out in February. So I think she wasn’t cooled long enough at low enough temperatures.

                • Forgot to add that not everyone burmates and still have successful kingsnake breedings. So maybe your female just didn’t like that male or wasn’t ready to breed? How old was she? Normal kingsnake breeding age is 3 years. 2 years for the males. Though some people breed females at 2 but they usually aren’t the right size at that point.

Jormungandr was dropped off at a local pet shop because the owner no longer wanted him for his habit of biting and striking. So when I came in that day my friend who worked there showed him to me and it was love […]

Aw that’s adorable! Reminds me of when my Jormungandr swallowed my pinkie finger as far as he could go. Took forever to get him off lol. But now he is a sweet little guy. He’s all the way on the other side […]

Great post Ashley. I’ve had similar experiences with California kingsnakes in particular. Baby kings can be especially jumpy, and they certainly won’t hesitate to musk all over you. Nasty.
