Latin Name: Testudo hermanni
Sex: Currently unknown due to age
Hermanns tortoises (Testudo hermanni) are a Mediterranean species and are popular due to their small size and hardy nature. They have a lifespan of between 40 and 80 years. An adult tortoise can grow to be 7 – 8 inches (18-20cm). Hermanns are a hibernating species of tortoise, although not advised for the first 3 years of their life due to their weight not being ready. Hermanns tortoises can live in a tortoise table and a vivarium as long as the humidity can be kept to a minimum. In the warmer summer months they can go outside, being cold blooded they need heat to function and the natural sunlight will help with healthy growth. Hermanns tortoises are herbivores so a mixture of plants, vegetable and fruits (in small amounts). Calcium, vitamin and mineral supplements should be dusted on to the food 3 times a week to ensure a balanced diet and healthy growth. Tortoises drink very little water so should be bathed in a shallow dish of fresh warm water at least once a week. This helps their bowl movements and ensures hydration. Fresh water should be given everyday.
