Mongolian gerbils get up to 8 inches (20cm) and have a life span of up to 8 years. They make very popular pets due their sociable nature (once they are used to being handled) and they are diurnal so will be busy digging and burrowing during the day. Gerbils are very sociable animals so prefer to live in same sex pairs or small groups. Their diet will predominantly be made up of commercial gerbil foods from your local pet shop but they will also eat fruits and vegetables such as apple, cucumber and carrot and even the occasional protein boosting insect such as mealworms.
