Latin Name: Chelonoidis carbonaria

Red foot tortoises are a type of tropical species of tortoise which have a dark coloured shell with a red face and feet. Adults can grow up to 14 inches (35cm) in length. Red foot tortoises are omnivorous but their main diet is veg, weeds, fruit and other live plants. Calcium and vitamin D3 supplements should be added to their food three times a week. It is recommend to house red foots in a vivarium to create a tropical humid habitat. Bark chips make a good substrate for red foots as it is soft and holds moisture and should be sprayed daily to keep humidity up. Tortoises drink very little water so should be bathed in a shallow dish of fresh warm water at least once a week. This helps their bowl movements and ensures hydration. Fresh water should be given everyday. Red foot tortoises do not hibernate. They have a lifespan of 50+ years.
