Bearded dragons(Pongona) grow between 16 and 24 inches (40 – 60cm) and range in colours from light yellows to bright oranges and reds but are often are light tan to brown. The zero is will range from a very light grey to a dark grey. They have a thick tail and a spikey, beard-like collar around their neck which is where they get their common name from. These spines usually lie flat but if they feel threatened, they will expand their throat and the spines will stand up. Bearded dragons are generally considered good pets, even for beginner reptile owners as they are generally docile and living on average 8 years. These animals are diurnal, so are active during the day and tolerate being handled well. Many bearded dragons even enjoy perching on their keepers shoulder. Bearded dragons should be housed separately, as they can be territorial. Bearded dragons are omnivores so eat a mixture of insects such as crickets, locusts and calciworms, fruits such as apples and vegetables such as grated carrot. Insects should be no larger than the distance between the bearded dragons eyes and should be dusted with a calcium and vitamin D supplement. Weekly bathing will ensure hydration without making the habitat to humid.
